Klimov did not make anything else on this scale. his other work is rather quiet compared to this. I suppose having his wife, director Larisa Shepitko, die tragically a few years earlier helped to bring the intensity forward in him. In any case this film will live for ever, because like Tarkovsky's work it somehow reaches into and brings out the very core of a person's experience (saying nothing of its huge historical importance. Free Du-te si vezie. The war part is underrated if you pay attention and dont skip anything itll be good. This is possibly the best war film I've ever seen and one of the greatest releases of 1985 for sure. Truly the stuff of nightmares. Thank you for doing justice to this harrowing depiction of a destroyed soul. 
Free Du-te si vézie. I was in the 25th DIV. served in Afghanistan. you gotta be hard. or it will make you hard🍻. This award-winning movie may become a real eye-opener for overseas audience. Apart from "Saving Private Ryan" American cinematography for the most part ignored the other side of WWII.
"Idi i smotri" shows the German occupation in Belarus through the eyes of a teenager. His village gets burned, his relatives get massacred, he becomes the witness of many other atrocities, joins underground partisan group.
The movie is very similar to "Saving Private Ryan" in that it shows the grim, the real face of the war. Yet it is quite different from Spielberg's masterpiece for it does not really show the happy ending, the way out, but rather leaves the reader to ponder over these tragic days.

This movie captures the horrors of the Vietnam War. Can you imagine being in that bunker at 1:39:10 ? And your sergeant telling you he'll be right back and to stay put and fend off the incoming silent shadows of death? What a horrible war. Thank you to ALL veterans. Well, I told you read about Distomo. There the Greek partisans fought with the German elite SS - 40 Germans dead, 1 partisan killed. As retribution the Germans killed 218 Greek civilians in a village nearby - Distomo. The priest was beheaded, babies were stubbed with bayonettes, the breasts of women wre cut out. It all stays in the recordings of the then German military police - so it is not a Jewish life. Greece is a small country, The Greeks beat the Italians - much larger country.
